Following the implementation of the State Audit Office’s recommendations for the arrangement of municipality’s accounting processes, Gulbene Municipality will be able to allocate additional 131 thousand euros per year for the needs of municipality’s citizens. This was stated by Gulbene Municipality in a report to the State Audit Office on the implementation of recommendations within the framework of the performance audit on the productive and economic use of municipality’s administrative resources for the fulfilment of municipality’s functions.

In line with the State Audit Office’s recommendations Gulbene Municipality has changed its accounting policy by centralizing the accounting function in the Council’s administration starting from January this year. Centralisation and improvement of the accounting system, which was recommended by the State Audit Office, will allow saving at least 131 thousand euros per year in the budget of the municipality.

The municipality informed the State Audit Office that the additional resources obtained in the result of rational economic management will be used to meet important needs of municipality’s citizens. This will allow broadening the scope of persons who will be able to receive the apartment benefit in cash. Part of the saved money will be used to increase teachers’ salaries in the first four months of this year. It is also planned to provide additional support for the participation of municipality’s teams in the Song and Dance Festival devoted to the 100th anniversary of Latvia, as well as to broaden the tourism offer of the municipality.

“We are truly satisfied with the fact that the recommendations provided by the State Audit Office result in real economies for the municipality. Now these could be used to finance other significant needs of the citizens. At the same time it is a possibility for other municipalities to learn, therefore it is important that we and municipalities share such practical examples. This is also fully compliant with our, as an audit institution, strategy: it is possible to learn from good examples before the State Audit Office arrives,” emphasizes the Member of the Council of the State Audit Office Edgars Korcagins (Edgars Korčagins).
