Today, 21 March 2019, the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia approved Dr.oec. Inga Vilka as the Member of the Council of the State Audit Office for a four-year term. She will assume the office on March 26 and will lead the Audit Department of the State Audit Office responsible for auditing Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Ministry of Culture, as well as several central government institutions.
According to the Law on the State Audit Office, the Saeima approves the Members of the Council of the State Audit Office for a term of four years upon the recommendation of the Auditor General.
Ms Inga Vilka has graduated from the University of Latvia with a doctor’s degree in public administration, where she has also been a lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and researcher, including international projects.
Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, Ms Inga Vilka has been engaged in the processes of improving the public administration in Latvia, including the membership in expert groups established by the President of Latvia.
Ms Inga Vilka has been working at the State Audit Office since 2017 as a Sector Manager in the Local Government Auditing Department. She has ensured the quality of audits that are significant to the public, has monitored the implementation of the recommendations provided by the State Audit Office, including evaluation the section of local governments in the annual financial report of Latvia.
The State Audit Department that Ms Inga Vilka will lead as the Member of the Council carries out audits at the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Ministry of Culture, the Cabinet of Ministers, Cross-Sectoral Coordination Centre, Central Land Commission, the Ombudsman’s Office, and the Chancery of the President of Latvia. The Director of the Department is assigned to ensure that the audit reports are of good quality and prepared according to the plan.
The State Audit Office is an independent, collegial supreme audit institution in the Republic of Latvia, which assesses by international auditing standards whether actions related to public funds have been legitimate, correct, economic, and efficient. When detecting any discrepancies, the State Audit Office provides recommendations for their elimination and informs the law enforcement authorities about potential breaches of the law.
